Cookies and the law

A European privacy law - the 'e-Privacy Directive' - came into force in the UK on 25 May 2011, which aims to give users of websites and other digital media more control over the information that is collected about them.

In essence they want to make users more aware of cookies and ensure that their consent is sought before potentially private information is stored.

The Information Commissioner's Office are responsible for enforcement of the directive in the UK and more information can be found on their website.

Cookies are also governed by the Data Protection Act 1998, in particular the first and third data protection principles.
