Web design standards

North Lincolnshire Council is committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of technology or ability.

We follow a list of accessibility guidelines and best practice when designing our website and its content. These include:

  • Maintaining a standard layout and navigation system throughout
  • Using headings, paragraphs, lists and other HTML (HyperText Markup Language) to create a logical structure to the page
  • Grouping information into manageable and logical sections based on topics, not council service areas
  • Allowing visitors to resize all text
  • Using plain backgrounds to improve the readability of text
  • Using foreground and background colour combinations which have sufficient contrast and are not known to cause problems for sufferers of colour-blindness
  • Providing text alternatives ("alt text") for all images
  • Designing layouts which work satisfactorily with a range of screen resolutions
  • Enabling a printer-friendly version on printing
  • Ensuring all links use descriptive and meaningful text, avoiding short-hand language like 'Click here'
  • Enabling navigation of the website using only the keyboard
  • Providing advice on changing individual browser accessibility options
